The terrifying moment a footbridge in the Mexican state of Morelos collapsed, sending a mayor and about two dozen other people tumbling into a riverbed was captured on camera.
The recently restored Ribereo Bridge at Porfirio Daz Park abruptly collapsed on Tuesday, while Cuernavaca mayor José Luis Urióstegui was joined on the inaugural walk across the bridge.
According to the city government, about 25 individuals were hurt.
A smartphone video of the incident shows a man jumping twice as he walks onto the hanging bridge.
After that, it snaps.
The man who jumped up and down manages to hang on to the chain line and hangs several feet over the streams rocks and boulders.
Following the event, Mayor Urióstegui stated that some of the individuals following him on the walk were jumping on the bridge, possibly in an attempt to make it sway.
'There were a lot of people jumping. That was reckless,' Urióstegui said.
The mayor went on to say that the number of officials and media on the bridge may have exceeded its capacity, leading it to collapse.
Four city council members, two other city officials, and a local reporter were hurt, according to the Cuernavaca city government, and had to be retrieved from the ravine on stretchers and sent to local hospitals.
Urióstegui was taken to the hospital with 'minor injuries,' but later spoke to reporters outside the facility.
His wife, Luz Mara Zagal Guzmán, has a left femur injury and was scheduled for surgery, he claimed.
Patricia Torres, a councilwoman from Cuernavaca, had surgery to correct an ankle fracture and is stable.
Fernando Carrillo, a councilman, was hospitalized and is suffering from a head injury.
After obtaining medical attention, Wendi Salinas and Mirna Delgado, both members of the Cuernavaca municipal council, were released.
