When the officer approaches the vehicle, you should ask "Why did you pull me over?" Make sure to comply with requests for ID, registration, and insurance information, but do not engage in casual conversation.
That point is important says Craig, who notes, "If the cop is talking to you, it means they don't have enough to arrest you on, so don't give it."
If you are being detained, keep quiet. When asked any further questions, reply, "I invoke the fifth!"
