Critical wildfire weather continues in the west with several massive fires still burning in California. The American Red Cross remains on the ground, helping the thousands of people whose lives have been changed forever due to the fires.

The August Complex Fire in the northern end of the state has now charred more than a million acres, labeling it a gigafire, the first in modern history. Evacuation orders are still in effect for some areas. Burning for more than 50 days across seven counties, the fire is only 60% contained. There are still evacuation orders in place for the Glass Fire in California’s wine country which has consumed more than 67,000 acres and is only 62% contained, damaging at least a dozen wineries. The blaze has destroyed more than 1,500 structures and damaged some 280 more.

Wildfires in California have burned more than 4 million acres this year, more than twice the previous record for any year, according to Cal Fire, the state’s fire agency. The state has suffered five of its six largest wildfires in history this year and more than 8,600 homes and other structures have been destroyed.
