Rapper Meek Mill has recently added "actor" to his resume.
His first role is ex-con and dirt bike gang leader "Blax" in the documentary-turned-feature film Charm City Kings. The film made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 27th, 2020. The reviews are in and many are eager to see how Mill's first acting gig went.
Charm City Kings received a positive response from film critics with a few qualms about the film's execution of a political statement. However, most critics took the time to mention that Mill's performance was effective despite the movie's downfalls.
Mill's role as "Blax" is a prominent one, as he becomes the mentor to the film's young lead, Mouse (Jahi Di'Allo Winston). "Mill gives [Blax] him the solidity and patience of the neighborhood sage, wisdom he picked up in prison. Yet, everyone else - especially Rivers - insists Blax is still a heartless criminal," writes Variety's Amy Nicolson. "The movie can't bridge the gulf between Mills' gentle performance and the other characters' obliviousness."
Publications like The Hollywood Reporter and Indie Wire also had favorable things to say about Mills' performance. And The Grio called it their favorite film at the festival saying "...Meek Mill delivered an impressive performance in a prominent role."
