Eminem shocked thousands of fans in his hometown when he showed up to the revitalized Michigan Central Station for a surprise performance.
On Thursday night, June 6, “Live From Detroit: The Concert at Michigan Central" went down outside of the formerly-abandoned train station in celebration of its transformation into a massive tech and culture hub. The show, which was produced by Slim Shady and his manager Paul Rosenberg, featured rare performances by Michigan natives Diana Ross, Big Sean, Illa J, Jack White, Kierra Sheard, Theo Parrish, Slum Village, The Clark Sisters, Common, Fantasia, Melissa Etheridge, Jelly Roll and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
Slim Shady appeared as a surprise guest during the show's finale. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra played the beginning of Em's "Sing For The Moment" while Jelly Roll held down the chorus. Eminem popped out with Mr. Porter to perform the hit song along with the other fan favorites like "Not Afraid." He also performed "Houdini" live for the first time, and even brought out the legendary Trick Trick to perform "Detroit vs. Everybody."
The concert was full of other remarkable moments that paid homage to Detroit's iconic music scene. At one point during the show, Royce Da 5'9" and Ma Dukes — the mother of the late J Dilla — spoke about the brand-new tech center crafted by the Ford Motor Company. Minutes later, Common, Slum Village and Dilla's younger brother Illa J hit the stage for a special tribute to the iconic producer.
