As crime continues to rise, city officials are exploring new ways to prevent it as well as prove it with more concrete evidence, like video footage. One new way to gather evidence will be tested in a new pilot program that will be in place over the next year in San Francisco. Although the San Francisco Police Department has presence throughout the city - they just don't have the ability to be everywhere at once. This is where residents come in and SF Supervisors agree that with their help, through use of private camera footage at residences and businesses, police will have more access to fight crime while it's happening in real time. Based on the measure that was passed by the city, the police department can now access privately owned security cameras - with the resident/owner's permission - even before a crime has happened. So if you have a doorbell camera or additional surveillance cameras on your property and there is a crime happening or possibly a major event that they want to monitor - it sounds like they can reach out to get approval to tap in and use your camera for surveillance and possible evidence, if needed. Would you allow the Police Department to access your home camera's live feed or recorded footage to help with possible surveillance while a crime takes place or even before It happens?
