As of August 15, all youth under the age of 18 are allowed to ride San Francisco's MUNI buses for free with the Free Muni For Youth Program.

Children in low/moderate income families previously had to apply and carry clipper cards to receive free rides. However, this new program allows any riders under the age of 18 to board buses without proof of payment. Youth 16+ are encouraged to carry their school ID or another form of age verification.

According to SFMTA:

The pilot program is possible as a result of San Francisco Mayor London Breed’s budget proposal for FY2022, which includes $2 million to fund this program for 12 months. This program will launch beginning August 15, 2021, in conjunction with the start of the 2021-2022 school year, and will continue through August 14, 2022, pending funding approval by the Board of Supervisors and approval by the SFMTA Board of Directors.
