RIP: Young Oakland A’s Prospect Found Dead

Casey Thomas, drafted by the Oakland A’s in the 34th round of the draft last year, has died.

Thomas, 24, an infielder who played collegiately at GateWay Community College in Phoenix and at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, before  being drafted by the A’s, was the son of A’s pro scout Tom Thomas.

Before the A’s and the Minnesota Twins played Tuesday night, the Twins held a moment of silence in Thomas’ memory.

“We were devastated to hear of this tragedy within the A’s  family,” Billy Beane, the A’s executive vice president of baseball  operations, said. “Our hearts go out to Tom and his family on their  loss; Casey was a wonderful young man and teammate, and will be missed  by all in the A’s organization.”
