The Oakland Police Department is reportedly considering the use of lethal robots.
According to SF Gate, the robots would be "armed with shotgun rounds" and used for certain situations, such as during an active shooter crisis. When asked about prohibiting the robots from using live ammunition, Oakland Police Lt. Omar Daza-Quiroz replied, βI donβt want to add a prohibit to use... Thatβs something we have to revisit after the fact, because what if we do need it for some situation later on."
A civilian oversight board reportedly objects the use of robots on the police force. An official decision has yet to be made.
