The Oakland Police Department has been handing out fliers with information for residents to stay safe in Oakland. The department is reportedly overwhelmed with 911 calls and a "skeleton staff of police officers is struggling to respond."

According to KRON 4, the Oakland Police Department’s Victim Services division shared the following tips:

CAR THIEVES

  • Keep doors locked and windows closed.
  • Do not drive alone, if possible.
  • Stay ahead of the game and plan your route. Keep to the freeway and well-lit streets when possible.
  • Leave room in front of your vehicle when driving. At minimum, try to see the wheels of the car in front of you in case you need to get out of there quickly.
  • Do not wait in the car in the driveway when you're at home.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings and have your keys ready.

ATM THIEVES

  • Use ATMs in well-lit area and avoid going to an ATM at night. If possible, go to an ATM inside a grocery store or bank.
  • If you see someone loitering for no reason or something suspicious, go somewhere else.
  • Leave immediately and do not linger with cash in hand.
  • If you feel like you're in danger, enter the nearest building or store to find help.

FRAUD

  • Do your research and do not give personal or financial information to anyone on the phone, online, etc.
  • Keep a look out for scams, fake websites, etc. and learn how to spot common mistakes or suspicious activity.
