Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has kicked up a controversy after announcing that she will only give interviews to "journalists of color".
Lightfoot made the announcement on Wednesday, criticizing the "overwhelming whiteness and maleness of Chicago media outlets" and urging local press to "hire reporters of color - and especially women of color - to cover Chicago politics".
A number of local media figures have criticized Lightfoot's decision. One local reporter who is Latino canceled an upcoming interview after Lightfoot announced the policy. Another reporter, an Asian woman, said her requests for comment from Lightfoot's office are routinely denied.
