Illinois City Becomes First In The Country To Offer Reparations

The city of Evanston, Illinois will be the first in the U.S. to offer reparations to black residents.

This week, the city council approved a plan to pay qualifying households $25,000 towards home repairs or a down payment on a property.

The payments will go to residents - or their direct descendants - who faced housing discrimination in the city between 1919 and 1969.

The city plans to pay out over $10 million over the next ten years under the program, which will funded by a combination of donations and a 3%tax on sales of recreational marijuana.
