Mariah Carey Recalls How Important It Was To Be Seen As A Black Woman

In a recent interview, Mariah Carey opens up about how being a woman of color in a male dominated industry was tough.

Carey said "Being Black and of mixed race, there's always been this, you know, stigma that white people have but then there's this thing where lightness is perceived as privilege.

The songstress talks about how when she was offered the cover of ESSENCE magazine, there were "issues" with her image and how Black women would perceive her. She stated there were questions as if it could really happen.

Carey landed the cover of ESSENCE magazine in 2005 and was able to tell her story about being a woman of color.
