According to Washington, he didn't take the role because of the dark subject matter that he thought was "too demonic," the other factor was his concerns about director David Fincher. Brad Pitt would be given the role of David Mills in the film opposite Morgan Freeman.
The second film that Denzel regrets not taking was Michael Clayton. Denzel didn't take the role in the legal thriller because of concerns about first-time director Tony Gilroy. The film would later have George Clooney play the lead role.
