Launched on Thursday, the all-star “I Take Responsibility” PSA — shot in black and white and produced by film and TV production company Confluential Content in partnership with the NAACP — shows famous faces including Julianne Moore, Kristen Bell, Stanley Tucci and Aaron Paul, among many other white celebrities saying “I take responsibility” for transgressions such as ignoring instances of racist behavior, failing to call out “every unfair stereotype” and “every blatant injustice,” staying quiet or trying to justify certain actions.
The video is receiving a ton of backlash. Similar to the “Imagine” video by Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot, which featured 25 of her famous friends singing the popular John Lennon song.
Consequently, Kehlani and rising rapper, Chika are among the many who have taken to Twitter to voice their frustration with the seemingly well-intended yet off color gesture.
Chika further explained her frustrations with the video, “you don’t get ally points for regurgitating what black people across the nation have been saying for years. i get the thought behind it & it’s appreciated, but what really counts is using your influence and privilege to challenge our leaders. not simply empathizing w/ n****s.”
She added, “no shade cuz i got a couple homies in this. but i am side-eyeing. this is what we mean when discussing the white savior complex. what did this video achieve?”
Kristen Bell is receiving even more backlash today as she takes on a new comedy series where she voices a Black cartoon character in the Apple TV show Central Park. She's also promoting her new children's book about... "purple people"
