The Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) has officially asked parents to not send their students to school on Friday as teachers plan to go on strike.
In a statement, the district announce that they anticipate a "high number of expected staff absences" and will not have enough people to staff classrooms. Student absences will be excused and will not count against them on Friday, April 29th.
Teachers are protesting the district's plan to close six schools in the upcoming school year. These schools include: Brookfield Elementary, Carl B. Munck Elementary, Grass Valley Elementary, Horace Mann Elementary and Korematsu Discovery Academy. Other schools in the district will also be affected, according to SF GATE.
The OUSD insists that the strike is illegal stating,
"We respect the rights to collectively bargain, protest, and disagree with District decisions. But it must be done within the bounds of the law. We have and will continue to strongly urge OEA to reconsider its illegal activity."
