Novato School Superintendent Kris Cosca is under fire with teachers and parents alike for receiving the vaccine at an event directed at providing custodians, food workers, bus drivers and special need students with the vaccination. The event at the Marin Civic Center was successful in vaccinating over 1200 of the Tier 1 priority recipients and there were 200 doses unused so Superintendent Cosca stepped in!
The issue here is that once the vaccines have been activated they do expire and are unusable so if someone is standing around they might be offered to receive it out of their Tier standing. I do believe this was the case with Superintendent Cosca. The other issue is, why did you not contact what teachers you could to stand by in case there were extra vaccines to prevent waste and also get some of your essential employees vaccinated? There were 200 doses that were unused and thrown away, what a waste.
I think this is a case of people demanding their children to get back to school and the teachers feeling like they should have been included in the initial tier guidelines for this event. They felt left out when teachers have been struggling with concerned parents and lesson plans through this whole pandemic. The pressures of distance learning have been real for many families and educators alike and the sooner we can get back to the social setting of in person learning the better. Most teachers want to get vaccinated before returning to the classroom. Hopefully with new plans in place for mass vaccination we can get there soon. Stay safe!!
