30 Years Since Whitney Houston Sang The National Anthem At The Super Bowl

Super Bowl XXV: New York Giants v Buffalo Bills

It's been exactly 30 years since Whitney Houston gave her memorable performance of the National Anthem during Super Bowl XXV.

She sang on Jan. 27, 1991, 10 days after the Persian Gulf War began. To many, that game and that song became a "This is American Strength" moment.

There is a term called "rally 'round the flag effect," where tragedy or war inspires patriotism, and Whitney Houston singing that day heightened that.

Babyface once said about Whitney, "Hearing her sing The Star-Spangled Banner — she made people proud that they were Americans."

Afterward, the song landed on the Billboard charts. Now, the National Anthem is what it is today partly because of Whitney Houston.
