Oakland Unified board member, Gary Yee, has noted that only about 83% of high school students are showing up to class. According to some Bay Area school districts, the students missing class are a kids who are homeless, in foster youth, English learners, and Black students.
Districts are concerned that the homeless student population has grown with families struggling to pay rent. Oakland and West Contra Costa school districts track attendance based on student participation and work turned in.
