After receiving donations from various tech companies, the Oakland Unified School District will be giving about 25,000 Chromebooks to students in late August. Classes are said to start on August 10 online. The school district has bought 5,000 temporary computers that can be loaned to students in the mean time.
The Oakland school district has also been in talks with various internet providers to purchase unlimited data plans. This would help students who don't have WiFi access at home.
Students will be asked to take a tech check survey to see what students need access to technology at home. You can get more information about the digital divide in Oakland here.
