MacKenzie Scott Donates $1.7 Billion To HBCU's And Other Causes

MacKenzie Scott, the fourth richest woman in the world, has made the largest donation in history to HBCU's. Scott became one of the richest woman in the world after divorcing Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. She had made a promise to donate her wealth last year.

Following up on the commitment I made last year to give away the majority of my wealth in my lifetime. (Note my Medium account is under my new last name -- changed back to middle name I grew up with, after my grandfather Scott.)

She has donated $1.7 billion to various organizations including:

  • $133 million to gender equity causes
  • $130 million to global development
  • More than $128 million to public health causes
  • $125 million to climate change groups
  • $72 million to “functional democracy” causes
  • $46 million to LGBTQ equity causes
  • $55 million to causes related to “empathy & bridging divides”

The HBCU's that received millions of dollars in donations are

  • Howard University
  • Hampton University
  • Spelman University
  • Morehouse University
  • Xavier University
  • Tuskegee University
