Trustees at the Oakland Unified School Districts are supporting to eliminate police from patrolling school campuses. They will introduce a proposal to eliminate the districts police department by the end of this year. They are asking the superintendent to use the money spend on police to be spend on psychologists, social workers, and other mental health professionals. The Oakland Unified School District police officers respond to about 2,000 calls a year during school hours. The school district has already tried a similar plan in the early 2000's but ended up having to call Oakland police for assistant.
The final vote will be on June 24.
