After agreeing to a settlement with the streaming service in June 2022 over allegations of racial and gender discrimination, Oscar winner Mo'Nique announced a new Netflix comedy special. Mo'nique took to Instagram to make the announcement in a video where she says “I’m excited to say that I’ll be shooting my first Netflix special, in addition to reuniting with my friend, director Lee Daniels on the Netflix film, ‘The Deliverance.'”
Netflix shared the same video with the caption: "put it on a shirt, write it in the sky, LEGENDARY QUEEN OF COMEDY MO'NIQUE IS COMING TO NETFLIX 🎉🎉🎉"
The unnamed special will be filmed in Atlanta later this year, where Mo'Nique was born.
In November 2019, Mo'Nique filed a lawsuit against Netflix, claiming that they had broke the law by making her a "lowball" offer for a comedy special in 2018. While Amy Schumer received an offer of $11 million for a special, Dave Chappelle had a $20 million offer, and Chris Rock received a $20 million offer, according to Mo'Nique, she received only a $500,000 offer.
The "The Deliverance" partnership with Mo'Nique and director Lee Daniels brings an end to their long-running dispute. In April 2022, Daniels joined Mo'Nique onstage for a comedy show to formally apologize for his prior actions.
“I am so sorry for hurting you in any way that I did,” Daniels said to Mo'nique in front of the audience. ‘She was my best friend, my best friend. Y’all think that ‘Precious’ was just…that was God working, through both of us. And we’re gonna fucking do it again!”
“The Deliverance” is a Supernatural thriller that will star Andra Day, Glenn Close, Aunjanue Ellis, Caleb McLaughlin, Tasha Smith, Omar Epps, Demi Singleton, Miss Lawrence, and Anthony B. Jenkins.
