According to authorities, a 16-year-old teenager was arrested after recruiting others to take part in a mass school shooting at Berkeley High School that may have included a bombing.
According to a news release from the Berkeley Police Department, the unnamed juvenile suspect was arrested after turning himself in to police on Monday, May 30. The teen was arrested on suspicion of possessing destructive device materials and threatening to commit a crime that would result in death or serious bodily harm.
On Saturday, police said they received a tip that the teenager was recruiting others for a shooting with explosives. Police secured and executed a search warrant for a residence after receiving the tip.
The police did not indicate if the teen was a Berkeley High School student. They also neglected to provide information on the teen's residence. Police said they found parts for explosives and assault rifles, as well as knives and electrical items that might be used to make more weapons, while carrying out the search warrant.
A warrant for the teen's arrest was issued at that time.
In a statement, Berkeley Police Department reaffirmed their commitment to school safety.
"School safety remains a high priority for the Department. As part of that commitment, the Department has a School Resource Officer assigned to Berkeley High School who regularly liaises with school and safety personnel... In addition to the School Resource Officer, all officers have access to a range of training and equipment that provide them the protection, skills and ability to rapidly respond to in-progress violence."
Details on whom the teen allegedly attempted to recruit have not been released.
