California senators approved a new law which will grant citizens the authority to sue those who traffic in illegal firearms. This came just hours after a tragic elementary school shooting in Texas, mirroring a Texas law aimed to curb abortions.
When the Supreme Court gave preliminary permission to a Texas statute which allowed private citizens to sue anyone who offer or aid in obtaining abortions, Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom proposed the bill as a rebuke to the justices. If the Texas law is found to be unconstitutional, the California bill will be automatically overturned.
Citizens in California could file civil lawsuits against anyone who distributes unlawful assault weapons, parts for making weapons, guns without serial numbers, or.50 caliber rifles. They'd get at least $10,000 in civil damages plus attorneys' expenses for each firearm.
