After California legislators shot down the idea of suspending California's gas tax to provide some relief during surging gas prices, legislators proposed another idea to send money directly to Californians. Legislators are proposing to send $400 rebate checks to every Californian to offset the increase in gas prices. The $400 check, similar to the Golden State stimulus checks Californians received during the pandemic, would almost equal the amount Californians are paying in gas taxes, $.51 per gallon. Legislators stated they believe with California's budget having a surplus, sending money directly to the people would be the best way to help those struggling during these surging prices.
