The new infrastructure package includes a new bill which will require automakers to install new technology that would detect and stop drunk driving. The monitors would disable the vehicle if the driver is intoxicated.
The new monitoring system rollout may happen as early as 2026 according to the bill. The Transportation Department will have to assess what the best form of technology is for automakers and also give them ample time to comply with the new law.
Breathalyzers have already been installed in vehicles for drivers who have been convicted of a DUI. The vehicle ignition disengages if it detects the driver has been drinking after blowing into the breathalyzer.
