The Bay Area's own H.E.R. will reportedly be making her acting debut in the Broadway musical turned film, "The Color Purple." H.E.R. will reportedly play the role of “Squeak,” (originally played by Rae Dawn Chong in Steven Spielberg’s big screen 1985 classic) who is a juke joint waitress longing to be an aspiring singer.
"The Color Purple” is in the pre-production stage with casting still in process. H.E.R. is also working with the makers of the film to possibly create and perform a new original song for the film. H.E.R. has previously created songs for films, winning an Academy Award for Best Song at this year’s ceremony for “Fight For You” from “Judas And The Black Messiah.” The film has set a release date of December 23rd, 2023 for the big-screen musical. The Hollywood Reporter also noted Corey Hawkins is set to play Harpo in the adaptation. The roles of Celie and Hudson Shug Avery have not yet been cast.
