You may want to reithing your Memorial Day plans! With the number of Covid cases on the rise in popular tourist areas of Mexico like tulum and Cancun, the governor of Quintana Roo is debating a potential lockdown in the near future.
“We knew that there were large risks during Easter week, that there could be a greater number of infections. Unfortunately, that came to pass,” Gov. Joaquín said.
Quintana Roo is currently in the Orange tier of the stoplight system, Green, Orange, and Red. Currently, hotels and restaurants are allowed to operate at 50% capacity, yet indoor activities or clubs are not allowed. Although clubs are supposed to be closed, reports have been made of clubs being jammed packed in the area per the Points Guy.
If the area hits the Red tier, only essential activities will be allowed and people will be restricted to walking around their homes during the day.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 220,000 people have reportedly died from the virus in Mexico. They reported having more than 2.4 million positive cases. Quintana Roo reported having more than 25,000 positive cases of COVID-19, with about 2,700 reported deaths.
