In 2021, I cannot believe people still feel their "feelings" have more weight than another person's humanity. Regardless of how you feel, you do NOT get to attack someone because you don't agree with them.
A transgender woman in Atlantic City found herself under attack after using the women's restroom. A woman and her husband began complaining about having to share the restroom with the transgender woman. So much so the couple chased her back to her table scolding her stating "it was wrong" to use the women's restroom.
"A man just went in the women's bathroom, and that's not right!" Smurro shouted.
Just in case you're wondering, New Jersey's anti-discrimination laws allow people to use restrooms and locker rooms consistent with their gender identities or gender expressions.
In the video you can hear bystanders ask the woman and her husband to leave the couple alone when her enraged husband approached. Allegedly he became more enraged after he realized they were being filmed. As the transgender woman and her family had stood up to leave Smurro then throws a beer in the direction of the transgender woman, daring them to meet him in the parking lot. Apparently Smurro wanted to fight.
The couple responsible for the hate filled attack have been identified in a Facebook post as Michael Smurro, the vice principal at Neptune Middle School, and Lisa Smurro, a cafeteria aide at Howell High School. Michael Smurro, a vice principal at Neptune Middle School in Monmouth County, now could face disciplinary action, officials at the school district where he works stated.
Sine the video has gone viral, Neptune Township School District superintendent Tami Crader told NJ.com that the incident with Smurro and his wife is under investigation. Crader dis not state if any disciplinary action had been taken. Crader did state the district would not tolerate violent or discriminatory behavior.
