The 46-year-old artist was originally sentenced to 75 years in prison after he was convicted of murder and armed robbery. According to the Daily Voice, the Harlem native, born Charly Wingate, was reportedly accused of coming up with a plot to rob Allan “Jay” Plowden with his stepbrother Kelvin Leerdam and his ex-girlfriend Gina Conway at a New Jersey hotel in 2006. During an altercation with Plowden's partner David Taylor, Leerdam shot and killed Taylor before all three fled the scene.

Max B and Leerdam were arrested after Conway implicated them. After their trial in 2009, both men were convicted on 9 of 11 counts including felony murder. Max B was sentenced to 75 years in prison while Leerdam was sentenced to life plus 35 years. In 2016, a state Superior Court judge vacated Max B's conviction due to a conflict of interest involving one of the rapper's former defense attorneys. The opportunity allowed Max B to plead guilty to one count of aggravated manslaughter. Afterward, the judge sentenced him to 20 years with time served, which cleared the way for his release in 2025.

Since then, Max B has been hyping up his release among close friends like French Montana, Jadakiss, Wiz Khalifa and others on social media. He recently got a visit from rapper Tru Life, who gave him some encouraging words per TMZ. Max's team also confirmed that his discography is headed to streaming services this month. He currently has a few projects like his Library of Legend compilations and his recent solo project Negro Spirituals. However, now it seems like his entire mixtape run from the 2000s might be heading to major streaming platforms for the first time.
