California may have to compensate Black citizens for historical housing discrimination with almost $200,000 per individual, according to estimates from Gov. Gavin Newsom's reparations group.
Black Californians, according to Newsom, need to get financial reparations for years of discrimination, therefore he has vigorously promoted his plan to do so.
According to the California Reparations Task Force, eligible Black inhabitants of the state could be eligible for $223,200 per person under the legislation.
By looking at housing gaps and extrapolating on the probable amount of money lost between 1933 and 1977, the task team arrived at its ballpark estimate. H.R. 40, often known as the Federal Slavery Reparations Act, has been stalled in Congress since it was first filed in 1989. The House Judiciary Committee approved it in 2021, but most people think it won't move forward after that.
