In the 1960's Samuel L Jackson was an activist during the Civil Rights movement.
He even served as an usher at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's funeral.
Previous recipients of this award include Tyler Perry, Barack Obama when he was Senator Obama. the late Rep. John Lewis and U.S. Rep Maxine Waters.
