A North Carolina high school student says he was denied his diploma for wearing a Mexican flag to the graduation ceremony.
Ever Lopez wore the flag draped over his gown, as a way to show his pride in being the first person in his family to graduate from high school. But at the ceremony, Lopez was told he was violating the school dress code and wasn't given his diploma.
The moment quickly went viral, with a small protest held the next day outside the school.
Asheboro High School says the issue was the dress code, not the Mexican flag itself, and that students were allowed to decorate their mortarboards. School officials say they are working with the family to "resolve the issue".
