Those watching the final debate on Thursday night didn't just learn where President Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden stand on the issues leading into the election, viewers also got a vocabulary lesson.
Traffic spiked on the Merriam-Webster Dictionary website and Dictionary.com as Americans looked up several words not used in everyday speech.
A favorite tossed out by Biden was "malarkey," which means "insincere or foolish talk," while Trump talked about the human smuggler definition of "coyote," not the Wiley cartoon animal.
The reference sites also noted searches for "marauding," "sovereign," "wherewithal," and versions of "xenophobe."
