San Francisco District Attourney Chesa Boudin just took office two weeks ago & is already making some huge changes based on his campaign promises.
People have said for a long time that it's unfair to hold people to paying a cash bail when they've been arrested for a crime.
The cash bail system disproportionately affects those who are homeless & also people of color according to advocates for those communities.
DA Boudin was quoted saying “For years I’ve been fighting to end this discriminatory and unsafe approach to pretrial detention,” &
“From this point forward, pretrial detention will be based on public safety, not on wealth.”. Now prosecutors will be using a “risk-based system” by attempting to determine whether a defendant might flee or pose a threat to public safety.
