The Weeknd has been hard at work promoting his two most recent singles "Heartless" and "Blinding Lights." At first, it seemed that "Heartless" was the lead single and "Blinding Lights" would be treated as more of a B-Side. The song's strong '80s influence and inspiration from the synth wave/dark wave underground scenes was honestly a bit of a risk for a Top Forty artist of his caliber. There seemed to be little interest compared to "Heartless," which immediately hit the charts and radio upon its release in 2019.
However, "Blinding Lights" has been steadily climbing the streaming charts and now backed with a fast paced music video, the song may see popularity in the new year. The video picks up where "Heartless" left off and is as full throttle as the song it accompanies.
It'll be interesting to see whether or not the public will embrace such saturated synth wave, and if The Weeknd and "Blinding Lights" will be the ones to bring about that shift in popular music.
