Barack and Michelle Obama's official portraits for the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian have just been unveiled!
Michelle Obama's was painted by Amy Sherald and Barack Obama's was painted by Kehinde Wiley. Both are very different from each other but capture both Barack and Michelle incredibly well.
The importance of this portrait is not lost on Michelle Obama who says, "I'm also thinking about all the young people, particularly girls and girls of color, who in years ahead will come to this place and they will look up, and they will see an image of someone who looks like them hanging on the wall."
Kehinde Wiley goes on to say, “This is our ability to say: I matter. I was here. To be the first African American painter to paint the first African American president of the United States...It doesn’t get any better than that.”
