The San Francisco 49ers have the 13th best roster in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus.

PFF, in partnership with ESPN, ranked all 32 NFL teams ahead of the 2022 NFL season, which included the 49ers at No. 13, breaking down strengths, weaknesses and X factors for each team's starting lineups.

The Niners are credited for having the highest-rated defensive lineman in edge rusher Nick Bosa, who graded at 90.6 "across his two healthy seasons in 2019 and 2021 ranks third among all qualifying edge rushers since 2019," along with a pass rush group that includes Arik Amstead and second-round rookie Drake Jackson, among others.

PFF also projects former No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance as San Francisco's starting quarterback and X factor for the 2022 season.

"It's difficult to go anywhere else here other than Trey Lance, who is expected to take the reins from Jimmy Garoppolo whether or not the 49ers are able to work out a Garoppolo trade prior to the season," PFF's Ben Linsey wrote. "Lance saw limited action with just two starts as a rookie last season, managing just a 59.9 PFF grade in 179 offensive snaps. The floor is lowered with Lance compared to a Garoppolo-led offense, but there's also reason to be excited about what the offense could look like with Lance's arm talent and rushing ability."
