Oakland's McClymonds High School Adopts New Mascot - An African Warrior

McClymonds High School in Oakland has officially adopted a new mascot, an African Warrior.

The school goes by the Warriors, but the original mascot depicted a Native American Warrior. With respect to Native Americans and their wishes to be removed as mascots, McClymonds students decided it was time for a change.

The Oaklandside talks about the new mascot, saying "One features a Black man in profile, raising a spear and shield. The other image depicts a Black woman and man wearing traditional African warrior attire."

The images were created by McClymonds alumna, Anika Janell.
