A 180-acre plot provided by SFO is reportedly home to an estimated 1,300 garter snakes, an endangered species.

According to The Guardian, garter snakes "have been pushed out by cities, agriculture and transportation systems, and there’s little space left for them to thrive. People have tried to pocket them for the pet trade, and the climate crisis has also put pressure on their prey and thinned the population further."

SFO provides these garter snakes with an ideal habitat filled with ponds, vegetation and a lot of privacy.

As SFO plans to enhance the airport experience for their passengers, officials say they will continue to provide a "good stable environment" for the snakes to thrive.
