San Rafael Couple Loses $11,000 In Phone Scam

A San Rafael couple in their 70s were scammed out of more than $11,000 from a phone call.

The call came in around 7 a.m. and the couple was told their grandson was in jail and needed bail. The caller was identified as male and was claiming to work in a law office, reports SFGate.

According to police Lt. Dan Fink, he told the couple that their grandson was arrested for a DUI. He then handed the phone to another person claiming to be their grandson and told them he needed $11,250 for bail.

The couple was told to "handle the transaction privately and not to speak to any other family members about it." So, they went to the bank, got a personal loan in cash, and contacted the caller. e

At 1 p.m., "a thin, white person dressed in dark clothing" arrived at the couple's home to pick up the cash. It was a quick transaction so the couple didn't ask any questions and the person left with the cash on foot.
