Moms 4 Housing Inspires Lawmaker To Use Vacant Homes As Affordable Housing

Oakland's Moms 4 Housing's fight for members to occupy a vacant investor-owned house last November has proven to be a game changer!

On Wednesday, Sen. Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley introduced Senate Bill 1079, a bill that would turn vacant homes into affordable housing for single families. The bill would also give cities and counties the authority to fine large corporations that occupy vacant homes for long periods of time.

Skinner gave credit to the Moms 4 Housing for bringing this specific issue within the Bay Area's housing crisis to national attention.

"There is no excuse for a vacant home when so many of our neighbors are homeless," said Skinner in a statement obtained by KTVU. "And helping tenants buy foreclosed homes rather than be evicted will keep people housed."
