Up-and-coming R&B singer Khalid had his first hit, "Location", at the age of just 18. The crooning, chill tune has garnered more than 8 million views on YouTube. Khalid sat down with 106KMEL's Shay Diddy to discuss his upcoming debut album American Teen and more.

Having just celebrated his 19th birthday, Khalid said his wish was one thing: a Grammy Award. But instead of attending the awards this year, he was busy on the grind, wrapping up his first US tour.

Khalid said the touring experience has resulted in a lot of growth and progression for him. "I learned a lot more about myself, but I also learned a lot about my fans," he said. "When I was 17, I didn't know what I was going to do with my life. I didn't know what path I wanted to take," Khalid said. "Now I get to do what I love with people who share their mutual love for individuality as me."

The power of music's capacity to shape people's emotions has been a driving factor for Khalid. "You could have a bad day, then listen to a good song – and it's the complete opposite. So for me to have the ability to give that feeling to other people, whether you're in Chicago or the Bay, is insane."

Khalid discusses the recording process of "Location," including bringing his friends and mom into the studio to listen to it, and its subsequent success and effect on his life. "It created its own culture, in a sense," he said.

Like many people in the Bay, Khalid couldn't help but show some love for Kehlani. He recalled meeting her and being invited to her show, and revealed that they've been talking about working together, "which is super, super special to me," he said.
