Several nooses were recently found hanging on trees at Lake Merritt in Oakland. The nooses, which have now been removed, are being reported that they may have been hung as part of exercise equipment. However, that does not “remove nor excuse their torturous and terrorizing effects,” Oakland mayor Libby Schaaf said in a statement posted on Twitter. According to the mayor, the findings are now being investigated as a hate crime.
