Loving every moment of his new-found fame, R&B singer August Alsina is more motivated now than ever before to continue his chart-topping success. While making a tour stop in the Bay Area with 2 Chainz and Pusha T, Alsina stopped by the 106 KMEL VIP Lounge for a fan-exclusive One Mic event, hosted by our own Shay Diddy. He discussed his hood-to-riches journey, almost signing with YMCMB, and what fans can expect from his forthcoming debut album ‘Testimony.’
The Def Jam release will officially drop on April 15th, which Alsina mentioned has major significance to him. Aside from being a monumental date in his career, he told Shay that the date is the anniversary of the release of his first mixtape ‘The Project’ and is also the 28th birthday of his deceased brother, Melvin LeBranch III. The murder of his brother was the turning point in Alsina’s life, which ultimately led him to make life changes and to take his musical career more seriously. His influence can be heard all over the intimate track “Downtown”, with LeBranch’s daughters making cameos in the video.
It was, however, the Trinidad James-assisted track “I Luv This” that helped the R&B sensation rise to the top of the Hip Hop/R&B charts. “I knew that when I recorded it, I wanted that [song] to be the first thing people heard from me, just because it’s an introduction,” Alsina explained. “No matter what is going on in my life – the good, the bad, the ugly – I love it because it makes me who I am.” He also detailed to Shay how the remix featuring R&B heavyweights Chris Brown and Trey Songz came about, as well as his collaboration with Jeezy on the album’s lead single “Make It Home.” In addition to Jeezy, Alsina confirmed that Schoolboy Q has a guest feature on the project as well.
Though signed to Def Jam now, the New Orleans native also touched on his relationship with Birdman, noting that timing played a huge role in why a Cash Money deal never happened. And continuing to set the record straight, Alsina clarified his supposed “crush” on Taylor Swift that’s been mentioned in other interviews, claiming he sometimes just says things to say it, but he definitely has love for the ratchets!
